Why do so many young professionals accept being under-compensated? I did it at one time myself. Is it intimidation? Do you fear being considered greedy? Lack of experience. Or maybe you do believe you're receiving what you are worth. That last one is occasionally true but not very often (in my humble opinion).
The world is waiting on pins & needles to hear Lebron James' decision about where he will be playing b-ball. No doubt this guy has no problem with being well compensated. He's proven himself. He's an overachiever. He's results-driven, focused and a team player. If you are a King James kind of professional, you should be paid as such. Get that paper...the dollar bills yall!! Ok I had a bit of a hip-hop diversion; I'm back now. Briefly, here's a few tips on getting paid what you deserve:
1. First KNOW what you should be paid. Be knowledgeable about your industry and position. What's the average salary, bonus, etc? Research this like your life depends on it. It does!
2. Bring something unique to the table. Whether it's education, a unique skill-set, strong sales, you have to set yourself apart from the rest. And no, a really cool haircut or incredibly trendy Versace jacket does not count (if you can afford Versace, you're doing ok anyway). Be confident that you add real value to your role, team and organization.
3. Be strategic. That saying "timing is everything" is very true. With unemployment hovering around 10% currently and there essentially being five applicants competing for each job, employers may have the upper hand. However, that does not mean under the right circumstances, one cannot acquire a raise or starting salary one desires. Know what you're up against. Know how much you really matter to your company and specifically your boss/team. If you think you have Lady GaGa or Usher star power professionally when others really perceive you as Fantasia or Jordan Sparks (both very talented young ladies but nowhere near the same league as the afore-mentioned mega stars), don't expect to be compensated any more. Not only do you have to BE a star, others have to KNOW you are a star!
Now go get the money you deserve! You're not in
